Fulfilling poll promise, Punjab cabinet approves 26,000 jobs in government departments

The Punjab government on Monday approved the recruitment of 26,000 posts in various government departments. The move comes months after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann promised to fill 25,000 vacancies in various departments after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power in the state in March.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced this decision after a cabinet meeting on Monday. The minister then shared the information on Twitter. Mann said that the cabinet has also approved the door-to-door ration distribution scheme. He tweeted in Hindi, “Recruitment has been approved for 26,454 posts in various departments.”

He said that during the Punjab elections, Mann had said that the process of advertisement and notification for these jobs would be started within a month. “In the coming days, we will also fulfill the rest of our guarantees (poll promises),” he said.

He had also said that 10,000 would be given jobs in Punjab Police and rest in other departments, boards and corporations. He said that jobs will be given on the basis of merit. He said there would be no discrimination, there would be no “sifarish” (recommendation) and no bribery.

Meanwhile, last month the Punjab government also announced that it would soon recruit 10,500 teachers to fill the shortage of teaching staff. The announcement was made by Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hare, who said that the AAP government is committed to strengthen the education system in the state.
