New Delhi: Supreme Court judge Justice Vikram Nath on Sunday said fundamental duties have always been placed before fundamental rights and the apex court reiterated the same view in a “hostage of decisions”.

“Fundamental Rights are only one of the pillars of the Constitution and cannot stand alone. It should be read along with the Fundamental Duties enshrined in Part IV-A of our Constitution,” Nath said while delivering his keynote address at the national symposium organized in the memory of late Justice HR Khanna.

At the symposium titled “Fundamental Rights vis–vis Fundamental Rights Under Our Constitution”, Nath lauded the “duties” that are “deeply rooted in Indian civilization” and how developed countries “pay a premium to them on individual rights”. international scenario.

Quoting former law minister HR Gokhale, Nath said that fundamental duties “have a serious impact on these restless souls, who have hosted anti-national, subversive and unconstitutional movements”.
