BERLIN: Seizing Russian state assets to help rebuild war-torn Ukraine remains a possibility, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Friday, but added that no decision had been taken at their meeting on the matter. G7 equivalent.
Lindner concluded the second day of talks, saying, “We talked about the continuation of sanctions with respect to Ukraine and discussed the issue of confiscation of Russian assets.”
Referring to the confiscation of Russian state assets, he said: “This is an option that still needs to be considered.”
Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland told reporters that the G7 discussed “somewhat” the idea of seizing Russian assets and using them to help pay for Ukraine’s reconstruction.
Canada is in the process of passing a law to be able to confiscate Russian assets it has confiscated and repatriate funds to Ukraine for reconstruction.
“The countries were in a situation broadly similar to Canada, in that they didn’t really have the legislative authority to confiscate assets. The authority we had before would freeze assets,” she said.
“There was a lot of interest from other G7 partners in Canadian law, there were a lot of questions about it,” Freeland told Canadian reporters in a call from Munich.
