Gandhi Godse Ek Yuddh Review: Rajkumar Santoshi played bravely with fire, raised an important question

Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh is a brave film. Is anyone playing in the gallery? The gallery here is the daily mudslinging that Mahatma Gandhi sees on Twitter. Or does it try to understand the mindset of Nathuram Godse? Despite this, there is no justification for killing. But what if Gandhi never died? What if Gandhi survived?

Rajkumar Santoshi’s latest film is likely to leave the audience in splits. It is not impossible to see that the fact that Godse is human may enrage many. Still, this Tarantinoesque alteration of history may generate some interest. However, this does not mean that the film has the complete intellectual capacity to hold both ideologies together. After a while it is a long series of answers to Godse’s questions. Nothing we don’t know. A segment that purports to be a critique of traditional views of Gandhi, he may take several glances at his phone from time to time.

However, Santoshi raises a very important question in the film. If Gandhi was there, would we have seen a parallel government? One is in contrast to Nehru’s idea of rapid industrialization.

Deepak Antani plays Gandhi and Chinmay Mandlelar plays Godse. Both the actors do justice to the ideologies in a way. An experienced unit is faced with the force of fierce desperation. However, what it lacks in performance is volatility. The tone remains unchanged throughout.

Where Gandhi lives, a lot can be done with the story. The first half of the film moves like a breeze, but in the second half, Santoshi bravely plays with fire. He regularly employs Mahatma Gandhi to dispel the rumors that surface. The ending may surprise many and not in a good way. You can see it coming, but people who believe in any ideology will be incensed. Still, the film does well to set the record straight with regards to countless TV debates, hopefully, once and for all.
