Born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1869 in Porbandar, India, the Indian nationalist leader was later nicknamed “Mahatma” for “Great Spirit”. A staunch follower of ahimsa or non-violence, Gandhi pursued Indian independence with utmost patience and perseverance. For India’s independence from British rule, Gandhi led several peaceful strikes and continued non-violent protests. He had a vision for a better world and a better India.
