Latif Ahmed, a native of Anantnag in Kashmir, spoke to him and agreed to buy the car, he said, adding that a deal was settled for Rs 2.8 lakh.

On 8 September, Ahmed along with his friend Javed went to Loni and made the payment.

Three of the five gang members were on a test drive with him.

When they reached near the Banthla flyover, two policemen on bikes asked them to stop.

Both Ahmed and Javed were forced out of the car while the three vendors remained seated.

The police said that during the process of investigation it was found that both the policemen were gang members.

They impersonated as policemen and caught the attention of two victims on the pretext of checking, while three gang members, who were inside the car, fled.

When they did not return for a long time, the men, disguised as police, went away with the pretext of looking for the three.

Ahmed and Haived reported the matter to the police and five people were arrested on Friday.

Police have recovered two cars from their possession – a Swift DZire and a Creta, credit and debit cards and a check book.

According to the police, the five accused cheated many more people in the same manner. They used to advertise on OLX and other social sites to sell luxury cars at throwaway prices.

Whenever a customer reached the NCR, the gang along with two of its members cheated them by posing as police.
