Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation J. Radhakrishnan on Thursday directed engineers to involve councilors in the implementation of civic infrastructure projects in each locality.

Several councilors have demanded that the design of civic infrastructure projects should be changed to suit local conditions and meet the needs of local residents, instead of focusing only on protecting the interests of commuters or other stakeholders.

DMK corporator TV Shemozhi from Anna Nagar zone said the residents had demanded a change in the level of roads in old Thirumangalam to ease flooding. “GCC is laying cement concrete roads on six stretches like Gandhi Street in Old Thirumangalam in Anna Nagar. But residents of 35 houses objected to the level fixed by the engineers. So, we changed the slope to drain the storm water to the nearest waterway. The work will be completed soon,” Mr. Shemozhi said.

Water logging up to a height of two feet was reported in many areas of Thirumangalam during the last monsoon season.

AIADMK councilor from ward 84 of Ambattur zone J. John said residents had demanded more classes at the Chennai school in Korattur. ‘The school has been upgraded. Plus One students do not have classrooms. They need 12 extra classes,” Mr John said.

On Thursday, the commissioner visited various wards to inspect urban infrastructure projects. Shri Radhakrishnan visited Besant Road and VR Pillai Road, Krishnampet Cemetery and surrounding areas.

He inspected toilet construction work, Urbesar route chart and their maintenance work, functioning of UPHC at Besant Road and Bus Shelter. During the inspection, Mr. Radhakrishnan instructed the engineers to speed up the construction of toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0. He directed the engineers to restore all the road cuts made by TANGEDCO and Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board immediately after completion of the work.
