‘Generation Gap’, IPAC Hunt After Internal Tension and Rift Poll List Confusion With TMC. What’s next for the party?

Internal differences in the Trinamool Congress, and differences between the party and the IPAC seem to be mounting, when confusion began with the party uploading a purported list of municipal candidates for municipal elections.

Political commentators say this is because there seems to be a growing rift between party seniors and party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. The miscommunication with the uploaded TMC list is a result of the issue, as Abhishek Banerjee was instrumental in bringing in Prashant Kishor, and now, differences are also cropping up between the IPAC and TMC, he says.

The opposition is taking cues from BJP leader Amit Malviya’s tweet, which said, “Mamata Banerjee has moved to sever ties with I-PAC in Bengal and other states where she was helping TMC. I-PAC was the brainchild of Abhishek Banerjee and was an initiative to revamp and expand TMC. This is another move by Mamta to bite her ambitious nephew. Discord escalates.”

Now different types of questions are coming out of the situation. Is there a difference between IPAC and Mamata Banerjee now, or is there a difference within the party?

The whole affair started with TMC uploading the list of 107 candidates for the municipal elections. A section of senior leaders has accused the IPAC that without their ratification, a fake list was uploaded from the AITC handler.

On the other hand, IPAC has clearly stated that they never owned TMC’s digital platform.

There are also reports of differences between a section of senior leaders and Abhishek Banerjee. Confusion over who uploaded the list also reflects miscommunication within the party.

Abhishek Banerjee became the party’s national general secretary after TMC’s 2021 victory in the assembly elections. However, a section of senior leaders was not happy with his growing strength in the party. Abhishek was instrumental in implementing the ‘one man one post’ policy in the party, which was disliked by seniors.

During the Ganga Sagar Mela, Abhishek took a different stand from the government, after which Kalyan Banerjee openly criticized him. Abhishek Banerjee showed that by strict measures, he had reduced the number of Kovid in his constituency, which was also criticized by Kalyan Banerjee. This started an on and off war between seniors and juniors in the party.

These are early problems between the two generations, as Mamata Banerjee wants the juniors to take over gradually, and Abhishek wants to take his own responsibility.

Party general secretary Partha Chatterjee is expected to meet the media today with the new list of candidates, and what will happen remains to be seen. Amidst all this, TMC’s relationship with IPAC also depends on how the relationship between Abhishek and seniors is.
