George Bailey dismissed claims that Justin Langer’s departure did not lead to the support of senior players. cricket news

Australia’s chairman of selectors George Bailey has dismissed Justin Langer’s claims that the former opener had to move on as head coach of the national team due to lack of support from senior players and support staff. Langer resigned on Saturday after he was offered a contract extension of only six months until October’s T20 World Cup final, despite Australia’s T20 World Cup win over England in the Ashes. “Absolutely no one deserves a saga that has been played out as publicly as it has been.

“Obviously they hadn’t received the length of the contract extension offer, so it wasn’t ideal, but I don’t subscribe to the fact that it was the person who was important to make that decision.”

Following Langer’s resignation, some of his former teammates have come out in support of him and have also criticized current players, including newly-appointed Test captain Pat Cummins.

Langer was appointed in 2018 following the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa and Bailey praised the former Australia opener for the kind of work he has done and the results he has achieved with the team.

“(Langer) wanted the team to earn respect with the Australians and he wanted to develop great cricketers and great people and I think he did exactly that,” he said.

“The team has done that, JL has done that, the staff around the team has done that. Groups, individuals, all three teams are very different from where they are today to where they were four years ago.

“(Langer) has to take a huge amount of credit for this and I hope he is very proud of it.”

Meanwhile, former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie has said that he is not interested in replacing Langer as the team’s head coach.

“I am not preparing myself for any job, I am fully committed to South Australian cricket,” Langer’s former Test teammate Gillespie told reporters.

“I have a lot of work to do here and I’m totally enjoying it.”
