The Aam Aadmi Party won a landslide victory in Punjab, winning 92 seats, overtaking the Congress, which was hoping to return to power, replacing Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, five months before the elections. Several heavyweights broke the dust in Punjab and former CM Parkash Singh Badal lost his traditional long seat. Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi lost from both the seats – Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur, while the Captain lost his traditional Patiala seat.

Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu also lost from his stronghold Amritsar East. Veterans of many political battles faced defeat at the hands of greenhorns fielded by AAP. The BJP was set to form the government for the third time in a row by winning 20 seats in the 40-member assembly in Goa, posing a challenge to the Congress in a multi-cornered contest.
