Ghazipur: Delhi: Another fire at Ghazipur landfill, doused after 3 hours. Delhi News – Times of India

New Delhi: Another fire broke out in Delhi Ghazipur Nearly two weeks after a massive fire broke out at the landfill, the site on Saturday evening required nearly 48 hours of firefighting operations.
While the East Delhi Municipal Corporation denied foul play, it now plans to build boundary walls on the periphery to check illegal entry from all around. “The latest fire was brought under control in 2-3 hours,” an official said. However, he also said that unless an alternative site is provided for garbage disposal, not much can be done to prevent such incidents.
Meanwhile, the three corporations will hold a meeting with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Monday to accelerate the pace of bioremediation. “We are working in extremely stressful conditions and unless something is done, it will be difficult to cope. Unlike the other two municipal bodies, we (EDMC) do not have any alternate site for fresh waste disposal. The waste-to-energy plant has not been operational for six months. Due to this, 1,600 tonnes of waste previously consumed by WTE is also being diverted to Ghazipur. The contractor has given a new deadline of May 10 for commissioning it,” said the official.
An official said the plan to set up an alternative landfill in Gonda Gujran was stuck. “We suggested 3-4 more sites, but all in vain. Installation of quarrying and biomining machines at a vertical height is a difficult task. We are trying to increase the number of trommel machines from eight to 12. Each of them can process 900-1,000 tonnes of waste daily,” he said.
