Giorgio Chiellini announces move to Los Angeles FC after Juventus and Italy farewell

Giorgio Chiellini announced his move to Los Angeles FC on Monday after bidding farewell to both Juventus and the Italian national team last season.

Former Azzurri captain Chiellini posted a video on his Twitter account in which he wore the colors of the Major League Soccer club with the message “The next chapter”.

The move was widely expected as LAFC teased the move on their account on Sunday with the message “coming soon” in Italian.

On Monday, the 37-year-old also said on Italian radio that he “needs an experience elsewhere to slowly end his career as a player”.

“I can go to a growing league where I can develop myself,” he told Radio Anchio Sport.

Chiellini did not say when he would quit playing, but said he would be “mentally prepared to act as a director”.

“I want to connect with everything that happens off the pitch, but it takes hard work, patience and sacrifice,” he said.

Chiellini left Juve at the end of last season after 18 years at the club, during which time he won nine league titles and four Italian Cups, and reached the Champions League final twice.

He left international football at the beginning of the month after being capped 117 times for his country and winning Euro 2020 last summer.

The centre-back was hoping to take part in another World Cup, but Italy missed the 2022 tournament in Qatar, leading to his departure.

He has had a mixed career in Italy in which he also reached the final of Euro 2012 but had a difficult time in the World Cup final.

Italy were knocked out in the group stage in both 2010 and 2014 before a historic play-off loss to Sweden in 2017, which earned them a place in the 2018 tournament.

Chiellini also faced the notoriety of being bitten by Luis Suarez in 2014 after Italy were out behind Uruguay and Costa Rica.
