More than 130 people died in Morbi bridge collapse

A suspension bridge over the Machu river in Gujarat’s Morbi town collapsed on Sunday evening, days after it was reopened after renovations. The bridge collapsed due to heavy footfall, killing over 130 people including women, children and the elderly. Known as ‘Jhulta Bridge’, this bridge was called a marvel of engineering. PM Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of each of those who died.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva becomes President of Brazil for his third term

Incoming Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva narrowly defeated the incumbent far-right Jair Bolsonaro. Lula, who received 50.9% of the vote, served as President of Brazil for two terms between 2002 and 2010. Brazil saw tremendous economic growth and widespread implementation of social welfare programs during its former presidential term. This time, he will tackle heavy issues in the areas of poverty, infrastructure, inequality and deforestation.

No need to pay bond amount at the time of MBBS admission in Haryana Government colleges

Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar announced that no student will be required to pay Rs. 10 lakh bond amount at the time of admission for MBBS in government institutions. Instead, students will be required to sign a bond-cum-loan arrangement with the college and the concerned bank for the appropriate amount. If the MBBS/MD graduates want to work for the state government for seven years, the government will finance the bond amount. Students will have to pay the fee themselves if they opt not to work for Haryana Government.

Elon Musk defends global layoffs on Twitter, loses employees in India

Elon Musk has fired a large portion of Twitter’s employees since taking control of the company. Musk has proposed reducing staff by 50 percent, which would result in layoffs of about 3800 out of 7600 employees and limited access to official email addresses. Twitter CEO Parag Agarwal, Financial Director Ned Sehgal and Head of Legal Policy, Trust and Security Vijaya Gadde were also fired.
