Global aviation sector aims for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050

The global aviation sector will strive to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, according to the long-term collective aspirational goal of the United Nations aviation body International Civil Aviation Organisation.

ICAO currently has 193 member states. The UN body also discussed sustainable aviation fuel and financing assistance to achieve low carbon emissions. The states in the ICAO Assembly also requested that a third ICAO Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels be held in 2023.

The first periodic review of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) was also held at the 41st ICAO Assembly. They agreed on a new CORSIA baseline from 2024, defined as 85% of CO2 emissions in 2019, and a revised percentage for regional and individual growth factors to be used to calculate offsetting requirements from 2030. agreed upon. Baseline is the reference period used to measure the growth of CO2 emissions in international aviation. Baseline to help airlines set targets under CORSIA scheme

Reducing carbon emissions will require a number of measures, including the rapid adoption of new and innovative aircraft technologies, streamlined flight operations, and increased production and deployment of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). It remains to be seen how airlines and countries implement these steps.

“The adoption of this new long-term target for decarbonized air transport, following similar commitments from industry groups, will contribute significantly to the green innovation and implementation momentum that will be accelerated to ultimately achieve emissions-free powered flight in the coming decades. should,” insisted ICAO Council President Salvatore Ciachitano.
