Global climate effort ‘inadequate’, more ambitious action needed: UN report

New Delhi: A UN Climate Change report shows that although countries are taking steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, these efforts are inadequate and more ambitious action is needed for effective results.

It noted that efforts to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 °C by the end of the century are insufficient.

“According to the report, the joint climate pledges of 193 parties under the Paris Agreement could put the world on track to warm about 2.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century,” a UN climate change statement said.

Current commitments will lead to a 10.6% increase in emissions by 2030 compared to 2010 levels, saying it is an improvement over last year’s assessment, which found the country to reduce emissions by 13.7% by 2030 compared to 2010 levels. were on their way to growth. ,

A 2018 report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicated that CO2 emissions need to be cut by 45% by 2030 compared to 2010 levels. The IPCC’s latest science, released earlier this year, uses 2019 as a baseline, showing that GHG emissions need to be cut by 43% by 2030.

This is critical to meeting the Paris Agreement goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 °C by the end of this century and avoiding the worst effects of climate change, which include more frequent and severe droughts, heatwaves and precipitation. .

“The expected decline in emissions by 2030 shows that nations have made some progress this year,” said UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Steele. “But the science is clear and so are our climate targets under the Paris Agreement. We are still nowhere near the scale and speed of the emissions reductions needed to move us toward a 1.5°C world. To keep up, national governments need to strengthen their climate action plans now and implement them over the next eight years.”

Steele said, “At the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow last year, all countries agreed to rethink and strengthen their climate plans. The fact remains that only 24 new or updated since COP 26 The climate plans presented are disappointing. Government decisions and actions should reflect the level of urgency, the severity of the threats we face and the lack of time to address the devastating consequences of climate change to protect.

COP 26 President Alok Sharma said, “It is important that we do everything within our means to keep 1.5C within reach, as we promised in the Glasgow Climate Agreement. These reports suggest that although We’ve made some progress – and every fraction of the degree counts – is much more urgently needed. Before COP27 we need to step up to key emitters and increase ambition.”

The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP 27 will be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from 6 to 18 November this year.
