The theme of Global Handwashing Day 2022 is “United for Universal Hand Hygiene” which calls for coordinated action as we actively work towards universal hand hygiene.
Global Handwashing Day 2022: The COVID-19 pandemic made us realize the importance of effective hand washing. But did you know that there is a day dedicated to hand washing? Global Hand Washing Day is observed on 15 October to advocate the importance of hand washing with soap as an effective and cheap way to avoid diseases. This day is an occasion to encourage and urge more and more people to wash their hands with soap. As we move through the COVID-19 pandemic, a collective effort will be able to make a difference.
An easy way to wash hands is as follows:
- Wet your hands with running water and apply a liquid or bar of clean soap.
- Rub your hands together to make a lather.
- Scrub your fingers, palms, the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails for at least 20 seconds.
- wash until the soap runs out
- Dry your hands with a clean or disposable towel.
Global Hand Washing Day: History
Global Handwashing Day was established by the Global Handwashing Partnership to design, test and replicate creative ways to encourage people to wash their hands with soap. The first Global Handwashing Day was held in 2008.
The first observance saw 120 million children around the world washing their hands with soap in 70 countries. Since then, advocates of hand-washing hygiene have used this day to spread the word about hand washing, build sinks and taps, and strengthen the need to wash hands. The day is sponsored by governments, schools, international institutions, NGOs, private companies and others.
