The production of the upcoming Hollywood film Barbie led to a global shortage of pink. The film’s production designer revealed that so much paint was used in the construction of the set that “the world went out of pink”, according to architectural digest,
In an interview with the magazine, Sarah Greenwood talked about making Barbie sets. “Maintaining ‘childhood’ was paramount,” Ms. Greenwood said, adding that she wanted “the pink to be too bright, and everything to be almost too much”.
The production designer said she didn’t want to forget why she fell in love with Barbie when she was younger. Talking about the set, he shared that the amount of pink used in its making led to a worldwide paint shortage.
But, according to Roscoe, the company that supplies the pink color for Barbie, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the global supply chain and 2022 Barbie production has contributed to the pink color shortage.
Lauren Proud, Vice President of Global Marketing, Roscoe los angeles the Times that “he painted as much as we had”. She explained that “it was lackluster” and “then we gave them everything we could – I don’t know if they can claim credit”.
Mr Proud said that “they wiped us clean with paint”.
According to architectural digest, Barbie’s set decorators Katie Spencer and Sarah Greenwood have never owned a Barbie and ordered a Dreamhouse from Amazon to draw inspiration for the set. “The scale was quite strange,” said Katie Spencer.
Director Greta Gerwig shared that the ceilings are designed to be small and “it only takes a few steps to cross the room”. This, according to him, was done to make the actors appear “larger in space but smaller overall”.
