With its focus on winning 22+ seats in Goa to retain the state, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is heavily dependent on independent candidates who have decided to contest on party tickets. One of them is Rohan Khunte, a two-time winning independent candidate from Porvorim constituency.
Khunte, who is now seeking a third term on a BJP ticket, released his manifesto in the presence of the Goa BJP in-charge. Devendra Fadnavis,
Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, Fadnavis said, “Khounte has won twice. He would have won this time too, yet he joined us. He knew that otherwise his talent would be lost. He knows that BJP will definitely form the government again.
Khunte, in his second term, had joined the then Manohar Parrikar-led BJP government as IT and Revenue Minister. He later resigned after differences with Dr. Pramod Sawant-led government. pegs formally joined BJPThose minor differences have been resolved, he said.
Speaking further, Fadnavis said that Khunte was a promising leader who can take the state of Goa forward for the next 20 years.
Khunte, who is also a businessman, said, “My manifesto includes a report card, which shows accountability. I have given, and the aspirations of people from all walks of life will be carried forward. My people are my strength.”
The manifesto-cum-report card talks about his work on various fronts like agriculture, power cuts and road infrastructure.
When asked whether he would look for IT and revenue portfolio if he wins for the third time, Khunte said, “I have never been overambitious. If I am chosen, I will deliver. I will take the party forward and raise issues in Porvorim. Devendra bhai gives us confidence. As an MLA and a minister, I have taken the matter forward till now.”
Speaking to CNN-News18, a North Goa election analyst, he said that what works in Peugeot’s favor is that other political parties have not fielded strong candidates. “In his last two terms, no political party worked on making a strong candidate there. That might help him win again.”
