Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday promised that there would be 30 per cent quota in jobs for women if her party comes to power in Goa in next year’s assembly elections. On a day-long visit to the coastal state, he claimed the ruling BJP’s ideology was “anti-women”, and asked people to check the track-record of new parties coming from “outside”.
The ideology of BJP is basically anti-women. Addressing a women’s convention in Margao, she said that her ideology would never like to empower a woman. BJP thinks they have done their job as government by giving gas cylinder free or some cash. But what they are doing is making women dependent and not independent, she said.
Gandhi said that women in the country have now realized that the time has come to speak up. “That’s why we have coined the slogan ‘I am a woman, I can fight’,” she said.
When crimes against women take place in Goa, the chief minister asks ‘what were you doing on the beach for so long’, Gandhi apparently referring to the rape case that shook the state earlier this year. Said while doing Their (BJP) leaders are asking why are you wearing such a dress, Priyanka Gandhi said, adding that it was the responsibility of the government to stop atrocities against women.
Gandhi said wherever there is a BJP government, the criminal is given protection while the victim is interrogated. He said that a Congress government would give grants of up to Rs 1 lakh each to women self-help groups, along with initial funds so that their businesses could flourish and help in marketing their products.
Gandhi said the previous Congress governments in Goa had always respected the sentiments of the people and de-notified ten special economic zones, as people were against them. Elsewhere, the Congress general secretary said that some political parties talked about things that had nothing to do with the elections and the politics of the time.
Priyanka Gandhi claimed that Congress is the only party which talks of development during election campaign. She was speaking after activist and former defense officer Captain Viriato Fernandes joined the Congress in Dabolim. He also referred to Fernandes’ comments about alleged environmental degradation due to the decisions of the BJP government in Goa. We are talking about cutting thousands of trees. Dual tracking of railway tracks passing through your forests and sanctuaries. Gandhi said that we are talking about nationalizing the rivers of the states.
The Congress general secretary said that the BJP government is giving a message every day that it has no respect for the people of India, the people of Goa and the beautiful land, sea and forests. “This government has completely forgotten its responsibility towards the people of Goa. It feels more responsibility towards its industrialist friends.”
About Captain Fernandes joining the party, Gandhi said that when someone representing the voice of the people decides to join the Congress, it is a “proud movement for us”. Earlier, Priyanka Gandhi visited Morpirla village in Quepem assembly constituency, where she interacted with him. Tribal women and their traditional dances also joined in. Many parties will come from outside. New parties are coming these days, he said in a clear reference to the Trinamool Congress and the AAP.
He said that people should see their track record in the states where they are in power. Have they developed? I am from Delhi, you are from Delhi. He said that there is so much pollution in Delhi that you cannot even breathe.
He said that after coming to power in the state, Congress will reserve 30 per cent jobs only for women.
