Goalkeeper Savita Punia breaks into top four in Women’s Hockey World Cup

Indian women’s hockey team goalkeeper Savita on Thursday said the team aims to “reach the next level” at this year’s FIH World Cup after finishing in the last eight stage four years ago.

The event will be jointly hosted by the Netherlands and Spain in July.

In the 2018 edition of the showpiece in London, India lost 1-3 to Ireland in a penalty shoot-out to be out of the competition.

But this time Savita says that India is all set to make the medal round.

“With more players gaining international experience and gaining the confidence to play in top teams in the scenario of big matches, we are on the right track to build a strong team for the World Cup,” said the senior player.

“We made it to the quarter-finals last time in London, and this time we are definitely aiming to take it to the next level.”

The World Cup will be played from July 1 to 17, but before that the Indians will gain valuable experience in FIH Pro League matches in Belgium, where they will take on the hosts on June 11 and 12.

The two matches will be followed by weekend games in the Netherlands, where India will play Argentina on June 18 and 19 and the United States on June 21 and 22.

Indian women have been placed in Pool B along with England, China and New Zealand in the World Cup. He will start his campaign against England in Amstelveen on 3 July.

Savita said that healthy competition between junior and senior players augurs well for India.

“With new players coming into the group based on good performances in the Pro League and Junior World Cup, there is healthy competition within the group and it is helping to bring out the best in each of us.”
