‘Good Luck and Goodbye, Congress’: Why Sunil Jakhar’s exit is ironic?

“Good luck and goodbye, Congress”. with this, Sunil Jakhari Signed by Congress.

as East Punjab Congress Chief walk out, his recent two moments in the party are different. The first time he swung Rahul Gandhi to Ludhiana, where the Congress leader announced Charanjit Singh Channi as the party’s Punjab chief ministerial face in February. Jakhar kept a brave face on stage despite heartbreak as speculations about him being given the top job put to rest.

The second was when Rahul Gandhi, announcing Channi’s name, looked at Jakhar on stage and said: “He knows a lot about Punjab and I learn a lot from him.”

Rahul Gandhi may add Jakhar’s parting words to his list of lessons. While praising Gandhi, Jakhar criticized his congregation; As did Hemant Biswa Sarma, RPN Singh, Jitin Prasad and many others before leaving the party.

Jakhar’s exit is full of irony. The blue-eyed Jakhar of the Gandhi family and Captain Amarinder Singh was chosen by the latter as the Punjab Congress chief. It is said that Rahul Gandhi was initially influenced by him for his knowledge of economics and Punjab. He was soon recommended to head the campaign committee as Rahul Gandhi felt that the pairing of Navjot Singh Sidhu and Jakhar could capture the hearts of young and aspiring voters in Punjab.

Sunil Jakhar entered active politics when his father and Congress veteran Balram Jakhar left it. His father was the longest serving Speaker of Lok Sabha and Governor of Madhya Pradesh.

Sunil Jakhar contested the assembly elections several times from Abohar in Punjab, and despite initial defeat, he tasted success in 2002. His patience made him a darling of the Gandhi family. Always one to speak his mind, Sunil Jakhar wholeheartedly supported Rahul’s decision to replace Amarinder Singh as CM despite being picked by Capt for the state Congress chief.

When Captain was asked to resign as CM last year, Jakhar claimed that 47 MLAs wanted him to be the CM. He never accepted Channi as chief minister, which led him to remark that “those who should be on their feet were made to sit on their heads”. The comment did not go down well and Jakhar had to face action due to protests from the Dalit community.

It was quite clear that Jakhar was preparing to leave the Congress. In the midst of the Punjab election blasts and a day before Rahul Gandhi came to the state, Jakhar announced that he would quit active politics.

Her road trip from Ludhiana airport with Rahul Gandhi seemed half-hearted. And now with his return to the Congress, Jakhar is expected to move towards a new destination. In doing so, he has put a sharp impasse in the path of recovery of the Congress.
