General Bipin Rawat’s funeral: Slogans of ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘General Rawat Amar Rahe’ reverberated in the air as a flower-adorned gun carriage carrying a coffin draped in the tricolour left 3 Kamaraj Marg for Berar Square. Huge crowds of people gathered on both sides of the road dedicated to bid farewell to the top general of the army. Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat was cremated with full military honors on Friday, two days after the tragic helicopter crash that killed 12 others, including his wife Madhulika Rawat.

The general was given a 17-gun salute as both his daughters Kritika and Tarini lit the pyre of their parents.

Along with around 800 service personnel, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, French Ambassador to India Emmanuel Lenin and British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis were also present for the military funeral of India’s first Chief of Defense Staff.

Earlier in the day, Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and several other dignitaries laid wreaths on the mortal remains of General Rawat and his wife.

General Rawat, 63, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 other defense personnel were killed when a Mi17V5 helicopter crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
