‘Goodbye’ tweet by ‘whistleblower’ Tathagata Roy created a stir in West Bengal BJP

Former governor and senior BJP leader Tathagata Roy’s tweet of “Goodbye West Bengal BJP” on Saturday has fueled speculations about his chances of quitting the party.

Speaking to News18.com, Roy said, “I have nothing to elaborate on about my tweet. It is very clear.”

In the context of why he is not clearly articulating his stand (whether he is leaving the BJP), contrary to what Roy – Humphrey Davy said (language is not merely a vehicle of thought, a great and efficient means) – said, “Language is an imperfect vehicle of thought and I am not going to say a word other than what I mentioned in my tweet.”

On Saturday morning, Roy tweeted in Bengali, saying, “My series of tweets was not meant to elicit applause. I was trying to make my party (BJP) aware of a section of the party people, Those who are behind ‘Kamini-Kanchan’ (lust and greed). I am desperate to wait for the municipal elections. For now… Goodbye to West Bengal BJP!”

In a recent interaction with News18.com correspondent, Roy said that he is sure of a group of people in the BJP, including some old-timers who are after power, money and women.

“Of course, I am not doing it (making bold statements against some BJP leaders) irresponsibly. I am doing it on the basis of information.”

Asked what would be his stand if the BJP challenges his “courageous and lofty allegations” against party leaders, he said, “I am under no obligation. But the issue is whether the party has challenged me.” Did they? They didn’t, did they? But why didn’t they challenge (my allegations)… Ask this question to yourself and ask this question to the party… Why didn’t the party (BJP) challenge me?”

Referring to who he is referring to in the party behind power, money and women, he had said, “This includes both turncoats and old-timers … there are leaders of both categories.”

Recently, Roy tweeted, “Any political party, including the BJP, has 2 sets of people. Those who have come to give whatever (labour/wisdom) and those who want to get whatever (power/money/women). It is not possible in practice to completely exclude the second category. However, the leadership should know who is who.”

His tweet created an uproar in Bengal politics as BJP leaders accused him of causing harm to the party despite the positions held earlier by the central leadership.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and National Vice President Dilip Ghosh said, “It is unfortunate that those who have been given due respect are now raising their voice against the party. If he doesn’t like the party anymore, who is stopping him from leaving?”
