Google Doodle Today: Google on Wednesday, March 16, came out with a doodle to celebrate the 200th birthday of French painter Rosa Bonheur, whose successful career inspired future generations of women in the arts. Born on this day in 1822 in Bordeaux, France, Rosa Bonheur’s early artistic education was facilitated by her father, a modest landscape painter.

Although Bonheur’s aspirations for a career in art were unconventional for women of the time, she spent years of careful study and sketches closely following the development of artistic traditions before immortalizing them on canvas, said the bio with today’s Doodle .

Bonheur’s reputation as an animal painter and sculptor grew in the 1840s, with many of his works exhibiting at the prestigious Paris Salon from 1841 to 1853. “Scholars believe that an 1849 exhibition of “plows in Nivernaise”, a government commission now located at the Musée Nationale du Château de Fontainebleau in France, established him as a professional artist.”

In 1853, Bonheur gained international fame with his painting “The Horse Fair”, which depicted a horse market held in Paris. As his best-known work, this painting is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

To honor this famous painting, the French Empress Eugenie awarded Bonheur the Legion of Honor, one of the country’s most prestigious awards, in 1865.
