Google is now building Maps as an augmented reality platform

At Google’s annual developer conference Google IO 2022, which was held entirely in person for the first time in two years in San Francisco, the search engine giant announced a new update for its mapping service Google Maps, Which is called immersive view. Basically, Google is combining Street View technology with satellites which makes it a Street View in the sky that lets you see a place from above. This will give you more real-time context and allow you to go to street level to see specific places.

Maps overlays with live engagement and traffic information that is based on augmented reality. This enables one to see the park or the side of the road or the beach you are looking at. Interestingly, the images behind the “immersive view” are all computer-generated and taken from a combination of Google satellite capture and Street View shots, taken manually by its cars. Google is able to fuse this data and set it into a precisely scaled world.

“We’ve been able to fuse them together, so that we can really understand, well, these are the heights of buildings. How do we combine this with a street view? How do we combine this with an aerial view so that something like Guess who feels too much like you were there?,” said Liz Reid, VP of engineering at Google.

Reed claims that this feature adds to the impressive zoom that Google Earth has but on a neighborhood level. Immersive View works on most devices but neighborhoods are limited to San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo, though more will be added.

Google is pushing maps for a more 3D experience. Third-party app developers can now tap into the Live View AR feature for Maps that lets super accurate location tracking in real work and an augmented reality layer on top. Google is working with developers to enable apps that will help users park their scooters or navigate stadiums or play AR games in the real world.

0 notes

Google Maps is now more of an augmented reality platform than a location/navigation service. It is becoming a digital version of the real world as it uses the vast amount of data it has and combines it with its powerful computing and augmented reality.
