Google faces penalties by the Indian market regulator in October 2022 for allegedly exploiting its monopoly in the Android market.

Tech giant Google has paid the entire fine of Rs 1,337.76 crore imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in the Android case. Reliable sources told IANS on Tuesday that the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has deposited the entire penalty in the Consolidated Fund of India within the 30-day deadline given in its order. Google faces penalties by the Indian market regulator in October 2022 for allegedly exploiting its monopoly in the Android market.

Earlier this year, Google issued a statement announcing that they would comply with the CCI directive for Android and said, “CCI’s recent directives for Android and Play require us to make significant changes for India , and we have informed the CCI as to how we will comply with their directions. We are updating the Android compatibility requirements to introduce changes for partners to create non-compatible or forked variants.

User choice billing enables developers to offer different payment options in conjunction with Google Play’s billing system when making in-app purchases. The changes were made after a Supreme Court bench said the findings of the CCI cannot be said to be without jurisdiction or with manifest error and affirmed the NCLAT order refusing to grant interim relief to Google.

The bench directed the NCLAT to dispose of Google’s appeal by March 31 and gave Google seven days to deposit 10 per cent of the total penalty imposed by the CCI. Google had claimed that the CCI did not examine the evidence supporting their claims in India and copy-pasted parts of the European court’s order.

When Google announced the implementation of new Google Play payment policy, Alliance of Digital India Foundation (ADIF) expressed concern over the policy change as Google will charge 30 per cent service fee from app developers and it will be a major drawback for Indian . startup ecosystem. ADIF therefore asked Google to put the policy on hold.
