Government approved to reduce domestic water rates in 10 days: MLA

Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath said here on Saturday that the state urban development department has given “in-principle approval” to reduce domestic water charges to the tariff revised by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council. A government notification to this effect is expected within the next 10 days.

He made the announcement at an event organized by Mangaluru City Corporation and Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to distribute Transferable Development Rights (TDR) certificates to those who have surrendered their land for road widening projects in the city. .

The MLA said the current domestic water tariff in the city was ₹7 per 0-8 kl of water for the earlier minimum slab. The MCC council has revised it to ₹5 per 0-20 KL of water and sent it for government approval. With this, the charge for 20 kiloliters of water will come down from Rs 174 to Rs 100.

Mr. Kamat said that once the government approves the revised tariff, it will be a big relief for the consumers as their water bill will come down. In addition, the minimum water consumption limit has been increased from 8 KL (8,000 L) to 20 KL (20,000 L) in various slabs before the tariff.

He said that before the election of the present council, when an administrator was holding the charge of the corporation, the water rates were increased. The MLA said the BJP had promised to reduce water rates in its manifesto for the council elections.
