Government issued 63 show cause notices to weighing equipment manufacturers

The central government has issued 63 show cause notices to manufacturers or importers of weighing and measuring instruments for non-compliance of norms under the Legal Metrology Act, which includes imprisonment.

“Notices were issued to the manufacturers/importers/sellers on the e-commerce platform, seeking details of the model, manufacturing/importer/dealer license and verification of weighing scale,” the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.

Some manufacturers or importers of weighing and measuring instruments are selling individual weighing machines, kitchen scales etc on e-commerce platforms, the ministry said, adding that such deficiency in service to the consumer would also result in loss of revenue to the government. Is. ,

The government reiterated that approval of models of weighing and measuring instruments, manufacturing license/ importer registration and verification/ stamping of weighing and measuring instruments are mandatory.

It states that the manufacturer or importer is required to keep a record of the number of weighing and measuring instruments and details of their manufactured/imported, parts sold/distributed and the verification fee paid to the government.

The government said that these provisions of the Legal Metrology Act were violated under Section 32 (failure to obtain approval of model), Section 45 (penalty for manufacture of weights and measures without licence), Section 38 (penalty for non-registration) punishable under. by importer of weight or measure), section 33 (penalty for use of unverified weight or measure) and section 36 (finish for sale of non-standard packages, etc.) with fine or imprisonment or both.
