Government mandates tests for cough syrup exports after deaths in Gambia and Uzbekistan

New Delhi: India will allow the export of cough syrup only after testing samples in a government laboratory, a government notice showed on Tuesday after the Indian-made cough syrup was linked to the deaths of dozens of children in Gambia and Uzbekistan.

Export of any cough syrup must be preceded by a certificate of analysis issued by a government laboratory, effective June 1, the government said in a notice dated May 22 and shared by the health ministry on Tuesday.

“Cough syrup will be permitted to be exported subject to production of certificate of test and analysis of the export sample,” showed the notice issued by the trade ministry.

Indian-made cough syrup was linked to the deaths of 70 children in Gambia and 19 in Uzbekistan last year, tarnishing the image of India’s $41 billion pharmaceutical industry.

Reuters reported last week that India is considering changes to its pharmaceutical industry policy, including testing raw materials for cough syrups as well as drugs.
