The West Bengal government on Monday constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe death of student leader anish khan, announcement comes after heavy protests A popular student leader who has led several social movements, including the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, has erupted over the death of Anish.

Ms Banerjee said those who were going to the family just to show their faces on television did not know that “I was in touch with Anish and he helped us during the election”.

Family for CBI probe

The relatives of the deceased were about to go to the state secretariat to meet the Chief Minister, but after the announcement of the SIT, they postponed the plan. The family members said that they want a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Earlier in the day, Panchayat Minister Pulak Rai visited Anish’s residence. The minister faced opposition from the local people who demanded justice for Anish. A team of police personnel led by the district deputy superintendent of police who visited the spot was faced with tough questions, “Where were you that day? [February 18, when the incident occurred],” the locals asked. The family members refused to hand over Anish’s mobile phone to the police and said that they would only hand it over to an outside agency or a court.

Meanwhile, protests continued for the third consecutive day over Anish’s death. Student organizations of the Left parties and the Congress staged a protest in Kolkata demanding justice for the family. The student union also clashed with the police.
