Government planning to make rear seat belt alarm mandatory, says Nitin Gadkari

After the unfortunate death of Cyrus Mistry in a road accident, the government is exploring road safety measures to prevent road accidents. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari today said that the government is planning to make it mandatory for vehicle manufacturers to install seat belt alarm system for rear seats as well. Currently, it is mandatory for all vehicle manufacturers to provide seat belt reminders only for front seat passengers. Addressing a Business Standard event to celebrate India@75, he said, “Due to the death of Cyrus Mistry in a car accident, we have decided that vehicles will have a seat belt beep system for the rear seats as well.”

Penalty for not wearing seat belts for the passengers sitting in the rear seats:

Under Rule 138(3) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), passengers seated in the rear seats for not wearing seat belts attract a fine of Rs 1,000. Most of the people are either unaware of this mandatory rule or simply ignore them. . Even traffic policemen rarely fine passengers sitting in the back seats for not wearing seat belts. According to a recent Road Ministry report, the number of people killed and injured for not wearing seat belts during 2020 stood at 15,146 and 39,102 respectively.

Two wheeler drivers can be challaned even if wearing a helmet

Two-wheeler drivers who wear helmets incorrectly can be fined. The helmet should be worn properly and its strap should also be tied. If the helmet is uncovered, the rider will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), all helmets should have the ISI mark. Wearing and selling helmets without ISI mark is a legal offense. A transparent eye cover should be used in the helmet. It is also very important to have a BIS certificate for a helmet.

Former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry died in a road accident on Sunday when his car rammed into a divider in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. The government is continuously working on making certain precautionary measures mandatory to avoid any further mishaps.
