Continuing compliance with fuel consumption standards will be verified in accordance with the process of conformity of production as outlined in Automotive Industry Standard 149, the statement said. “The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a notification dated 1st July 2022, amending Rule 115G of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) 1989, for various categories of light, medium and heavy duty vehicles manufactured or imported in India. To include compliance with Fuel Consumption Standards (FCS) for motor vehicles,” it said.
Prior to this notification, M1 category vehicles (motor vehicles used for the carriage of passengers, including not more than 8 seats other than the driver’s seat) with Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) complying with the Annual Fuel Consumption Standard was applicable. As of now, all vehicles falling under the M1 category have to comply with the annual fuel consumption norms. The notification proposes to amend Rule 115G of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules to include different categories of vehicles including M2, M3, N2 and N3.
MoRTH in a statement said that the objective of this notification is to expand the scope of vehicles to be FCS compliant, and hence to introduce more fuel efficient vehicles in the country. The statement further said that the date of entry into force of this notification is April 1, 2023 and comments are invited from all stakeholders within 30 days from the date of notification.
