Government to offload around 50,000 tonnes of onions from buffer stock – Times of India

New Delhi: The government will offload around 50,000 tonnes of onions from its buffer stock in some cities like Delhi and Guwahati, where retail prices are slightly higher than the all-India average rates.
To stabilize onion prices, the central government is maintaining a buffer stock of 2.5 lakh tonnes of onions.
Sources said the consumer affairs department will sell 50,000 tonnes of onions from its buffer stock to cities like Delhi and Guwahati.
He said that there are many cities where the prices are higher than the all India average rates.
The all-India average price of onion stood at Rs 26 per kg on Tuesday.
Sources said that since the shelf life of onions is short, the department has written to all the states to place orders when there is a requirement of onions. The center is giving onions around Rs 18 per kg.
He said that the department is also exploring how to improve the shelf life of onions through irradiation process.
In 2020-21, onion production was 266.41 lakh tonnes and consumption was 160.50 lakh tonnes.
Due to its perishable nature and the gap between Rabi and Kharif crops, onion prices tend to rise during the low months of September to December.
The total post-harvest loss of onion is due to several factors like loss of moisture content, fungal infection, rot loss, germination loss etc. which can be reduced through better storage facilities.
To address the problem of post-harvest loss of onions, the department has launched a hackathon/grand challenge for the scientific community, researchers and startups to explore the idea and development of a prototype for post-harvest storage of onions. can be done.
The challenge has four verticals, namely, improvement in the design of storage structures, pre-harvest phase, primary processing and pricing; Value addition and utilization of onion waste.
