Government to recommend reopening of schools in DDMA meeting

Sisodia says that the epidemic is affecting the education and mental health of children

The Delhi government will recommend the reopening of schools in the capital at a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority on Thursday. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday said the pandemic-induced school closures have not only affected children’s studies but also their mental health and it is important to reopen institutions.

physical classes required

He said that schools are being reopened in many countries and many Indian states. Stating that online education can never replace physical classes, the deputy CM said the government had closed schools when it was not safe for children, but excessive caution is now proving harmful. As the COVID cases and positivity rate are declining in Delhi, he said that it would not be prudent to keep children away from schools now.

“In the last two years, the life of school children has become confined to their rooms. Instead of going to school and spending time in playgrounds, all their activities are now done only on mobile phones. During COVID, our priority was the safety of the children. But since various researches have now found that COVID is not so harmful for children, it is important to reopen schools, as now is the time for exams and related preparations,” Mr Sisodia said.

The Deputy CM met a delegation of parents, who submitted a memorandum signed by over 1,600 parents for the reopening of schools.
