Morbi:

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday night visited the state’s Morbi town and took stock of the ongoing rescue operation after a newly constructed suspension bridge over the Machhu river collapsed in the evening, killing at least 90 people.

After reaching Morbi, Mr Patel accompanied by Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi reached the river bank and inquired about the ongoing rescue operation from the authorities, a state government release said.

Thereafter Mr. Patel and Mr. Sanghvi reached Morbi Civil Hospital to meet the injured victims of the accident. During the visit, the survivors narrated their ordeal to the Chief Minister.

Earlier, the state government announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 for the injured, the release said.

The Chief Minister’s Office said that an isolation ward has been set up at the Civil Hospital for the treatment of those injured in the bridge collapse.

Officials said the more than a century old bridge, which was reopened on October 26 after extensive repairs and renovations, collapsed around 6.30 pm, when it was packed with people.
