Gujarat govt plans for hope, new moms as BJP lures women to repeat UP’s success

Addressing workers on BJP foundation day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the contribution of women to the party’s electoral victory and those facing state elections are learning from it, especially Gujarat.

Keeping women at the center of his election strategy, BJP government in GujaratThe state is all set to unveil the ‘Suposhit Mata Swasthya Bal Yojana’ with an aim to ensure health care for mothers and their babies, ahead of the assembly elections. Recently this scheme was announced in the budget.

According to the estimates of the state government, about 17 lakh beneficiaries will get benefit under this scheme.

The senior leader also cites the example of Uttar Pradesh where women voters’ appreciation for the government’s free ration and better law and order ensured the party’s victory.

The BJP feels that this scheme designed for healthy mothers and children will prove to be a game changer in the elections to be held later this year.

Addressing the workers on BJP’s foundation day, the PM credited the women for the party’s victory in every election. The PM further said that this is not just an election event but an awareness which is social and nationalist in nature.

Called Suposhit Mata Swasthya Bal Yojana (SMSBY), the scheme works on the premise that the first 1,000 days of human life, including the 270 days of the fetus in the womb, are critical.

The main objective of the scheme is to focus on 1,000 days of proper care and nutrition of mothers and children, as well as to enhance the nutritional status of mothers of babies in the age group of 0-24 months, registered under the National Food Security Act, Gujarat .

“During the period of pregnancy and lactation, the mother needs extra calories and protein for better nutrition of the fetus and herself,” a senior official said.

A senior BJP leader said a provision was made in the budget recently and sources said the scheme would be launched soon with a focus on the health of expectant and new mothers.

Senior officials overseeing the scheme told News18.com that the government would provide the nutrition kits free of cost.

“This includes 1 kg toor dal, 2 kg chana and 1 kg edible oil every month to all the beneficiaries enrolled in Anganwadi centres. The raw ration in the kit will be distributed along with the Take Home Ration (THR) rich in micronutrients. This will meet about 55% of the average daily requirement of protein and energy during pregnancy and lactation period,” said an official.
