Gujarat Phase-1 Election: 211 ‘crorepati’ in fray, 79 BJP candidates

Less than a week is left for the Gujarat Assembly elections, which are scheduled to be held in two phases – on December 1 and December 5.

According to the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) report, of the 788 candidates in the first phase, 211 are “crorepatis”, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accounts for 79 candidates.

This means that 27% of the total candidates in the fray have assets more than 1 crore. BJP, Which is contesting all the 89 seats in the first phase, which has 79 candidates or 89% of its candidates whose assets are more than One crore, followed by opposition Congress with 65 candidates at 73% and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with 33 candidates at 38%.

As per ADR report, Ramesh Tiyala is the richest person with total declared assets 175 crores. Tiala is contesting as a BJP candidate from Rajkot South Assembly Constituency.

Congress candidate from Rajkot East seat Indranil Rajguru is with Tilala 162 crore assets. BJP candidate from Manavdar seat Jawahar Chavda has property 130 crores.

On the other hand, Bhupendra Patolia, an independent candidate from Rajkot West assembly seat, has declared zero assets in his affidavit.

Among other candidates, 73 have declared assets more than 5 crore, among 77 others 2 crores and 5 crore, among 125 candidates 50 lakhs and 2 crore, between 170 10 lakh more 50 lakhs, and with less than 343 10 lakh as per the ADR figures.

Party wise, the average assets are 13.40 crore to BJP 8.38 crore for Congress, and 1.99 crores for you.

The report states that in the first phase of the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections, 21% of the total 198 or 923 candidates were “crorepatis”.

Further sharing the data on the education qualification of the candidates, the ADR report mentions that 62% of the candidates have studied between class 5 and class 12; 185 are graduates, and 21 are diploma holders.

At least 57 candidates are literate, while another 37 are illiterate.
