Gujarat polls: With just 1 candidate, 1,267 gram panchayats become ‘completely unopposed’

Village panchayat elections are not fought on party symbols (PTI)

On the last day of withdrawal of nominations, the SEC said only one candidate was in the fray in 1,267 gram panchayats, thus making them completely unopposed.

A total of 1,267 gram panchayats have been declared “completely unopposed” ahead of the December 19 polling in the state. Election Commission (SEC) said on Tuesday. On the last day of withdrawal of nominations, the SEC said only one candidate was in the fray in 1,267 gram panchayats, thus making them completely unopposed.

Incidentally, the Gujarat government provides incentives and additional grants to gram panchayats that become completely unopposed or “samras”. Village panchayat elections are not contested on party symbols, and candidates are required to contest in their individual capacity, with voters electing a sarpanch and a certain number of panchayat members.

Last month, the SEC had announced elections for 10,879 gram panchayats on December 19, the results of which were declared on December 21.
