Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government on Monday introduced legislation that would ban the import, purchase or sale of handguns. “We’re limiting the market for handguns,” Trudeau said. The rules preventing the development of individually owned handguns are expected to go into effect this fall. “It would be illegal to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada,” the prime minister said. The families of the shooting victims joined them at a news conference in Ottawa. Canada already has plans to ban 1,500 types of military-style firearms and offer a mandatory buyback program that will begin at the end of the year. Trudeau said if anyone really wanted to keep their assault weapon, it would be completely disabled.
