Guru Nanak Jayanti 2022: The festival, also known as Gurupurab or Guru Nanak’s Festival of Lights, is celebrated on Kartik Purnima, the fifteenth lunar day in the month of Kartik. It is celebrated all over the world on the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first of the ten Sikh Gurus and the founder of Sikhism. “Guruparv” is made up of two words- “Guru”, which means Guru or Guru, and “Purab”, which in Hindi means Parva, which means day. This year Guru Parv is being celebrated on 8th November, which is going to be celebrated as the 553rd birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Since Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the flag bearer of virtue, equality, goodness and love, he is regarded as one of the most religious thinkers of all time.
Apart from being a great preacher of love and goodness, he was also a great poet and his thoughts, ideas and words are listed as 974 poetic hymns in the ‘Guru Granth Sahib’, the holy scripture of Sikhism. His place of birth is known as Nankana Sahib. The celebration of Gurpurab or Prakash Utsav begins 15 days before his birth anniversary. It usually begins with Prabhat Feris – a morning procession that begins at gurdwaras and proceeds through areas singing hymns.
