Guwahati civic polls: BJP, AAP each ward, counting continues

The BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party got one ward each in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation as the counting of votes for the municipal elections began on Sunday.

Elections were held in 57 wards of GMC on Friday, while in three wards BJP candidates were declared elected unopposed earlier.

According to the information given by Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration, BJP has won Ward No. 41, while AAP has won Ward No. 42.

Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) data shows that the BJP was leading in three more wards till 11 am.

For the first time in the GMC elections, an overall voter turnout of 52.80 per cent was recorded in the EVMs used for voting at all the polling stations. 197 candidates are in the fray. The BJP had fielded candidates on 53 seats, out of which three were elected unopposed.

The Asom Gana Parishad, an ally of the saffron party in the ruling alliance in Dispur, is contesting in seven wards. Congress has 54 wards, AAP in 38, Asom Jatiya Parishad in 25 and CPI(M) in four.

19 others, including independents, are also in the polls.
