The Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police in Karnataka directed to take necessary measures to ensure the peaceful celebration of ‘Hosathodaku’ (a day after Ugadi, which falls on a Sunday).

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police in all districts of Karnataka have been directed to take necessary measures to ensure the peaceful celebration of ‘Hosathodaku’ (a day after Ugadi, which falls on a Sunday).

The directive comes amid a campaign by Hindutva groups such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, urging Hindus to shun halal meat during the festival. There have been cases of Muslim traders being attacked during such campaigns.

Responding to a query by media persons, Mr Bommai said, “Festivals should be celebrated without any disturbance in law and order.” He said that the officials have been directed to hold peace meetings in their areas to ensure the peaceful conduct of the festival.

The campaign targeting Muslim traders in Karnataka has been condemned by civil society groups and a section of the business community.
