Hanuman Chalisa controversy: Won’t arrest MP Navneet Rana and her husband till June 9, Mumbai Police tells court

The Ranas were arrested by Mumbai Police on April 23 after they announced that they would recite Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s private residence ‘Matoshree’ in suburban Bandra.

Mumbai Police on Wednesday told a special court here that they would not arrest Independent MP Navneet Rana and her MLA-husband Ravi Rana till June 9. Controversy over the text of ‘Hanuman Chalisa’.

The Ranas were arrested by Mumbai Police on April 23 after they announced that they would recite Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s private residence ‘Matoshree’ in suburban Bandra.

On May 5, Special Judge RN Rokade granted bail to the couple imposing certain conditions, including that they should not make any statement to the press related to the case. The judge had also said that if the couple committed a similar offense again, the bail would be forfeited. The Mumbai Police had on May 9 moved a special court seeking that the bail of the politician couple be canceled on the ground that they had allegedly violated the bail conditions.

On Wednesday, Navneet Rana, Lok Sabha member from Amravati in Maharashtra and Ravi Rana, MLA from Badnera, filed a joint reply on the police’s plea. The couple said that they neither interfered with the police investigation nor did they make any public statements related to the case. He also said that the police has failed to provide any concrete reason for seeking cancellation of his bail. Following their reply, the police said in a statement before the court that they would not take any coercive action against the couple till the next hearing. Accepting the statement, the special court fixed the matter for further hearing on June 9.
