Happy New Year 2022: New Year’s Eve is a day of celebration and new beginnings. People from all over the world celebrate the occasion in their own unique cultural way which also includes sumptuous food and drink. Let’s take a look at what’s on the plate of people around the world on New Year’s Eve.

Tamales, Mexico

The people of the Central American region welcome the new year with a delicious dish called tamales. This dish consists of cornmeal stuffed with meat, cheese and other mouth-watering ingredients. Usually tamarind is wrapped in banana leaves or corn bran and is a main dish especially during the holiday season. This Mexican festive dish is often served with menudo, a tripe and hominy soup that is famous for hangovers.

Marzipanschwein or Gluckschwein in Austria and Germany

These European countries like to celebrate the start of the new year with a number of festive foods, one of which is small pigs made from marzipan, called marzipan schwinn. Good luck pigs, or known in German as Gluckschwein, these miniature biscuits or pastries are made of all kinds of things, and are common gifts in both Austria and Germany.

Soba Noodles, Japan

In the Far East, the New Year is often celebrated with a steaming bowl of the delicious noodle soup dish. The Japanese like to slap on a bowl of buckwheat soba noodles, or toshikoshi soba, on New Year’s Eve to say goodbye to the coming year and welcome the coming year. Long noodles are a symbol of longevity and prosperity in Japanese culture.

Cotechino con lenticchie, Italy

Italians start the new year with a traditional cotechino con lenticchi. The dish consists of a stew of sausage and lentils that are believed to bring good luck, as lentils represent wealth and good fortune.

Kranskej, Denmark and Norway

In the Nordic region, the new year is marked with a wreath cake or kranskage as it is called in Danish. The Cake Tower is made up of several concentric rings of cakes layered on top of each other for New Year’s Eve.
