Teddy Day is celebrated on 10 February. The fourth day of Valentine’s Week is dedicated to the teddy bear – the ultimate symbol of love and affection. Teddy bears are gifted by people today to their partners and friends, but the history behind this popular stuffed toy is remarkable. The teddy bear takes its name from former US President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt, who in 1902 refused to shoot a tied black bear. A political cartoon inspired by the act reaches businessman and inventor Maurice Mitchom and his wife, Rose. When they saw the cartoon, the couple decided to make a stuffed toy bear in memory of the president. Maurice Michom called it “Teddy’s Bear” and that’s how it came to be.
Today, teddy bears are sold in gift shops around the world. People give these cute toys to their partner as a symbol of their love and affection. Teddy bears are also a great gift for friends, but if you’re not with the person you love on Teddy Day, you can always cheer them up with a digital greeting.
