Harbhajan Singh likely to be AAP’s Rajya Sabha candidate as party aims to strengthen youth connect: Sources

Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh is likely to be one of the five Rajya Sabha candidates of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). According to party sources, the inclusion of the cricketer in his team will strengthen the party’s bond with the youth and he will also give suggestions during the process of setting up a sports university in Punjab, as promised by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Mann is a renowned sports enthusiast and is said to have been enthralled by the likes of Singh, popularly known as Bhajji.

Soon after AAP’s victory in Punjab, the former cricketer had congratulated Mann and called him “my friend”. New CM in Bhagat Singh’s village Khatkarkalan… What a picture… It’s a proud moment for Mata ji.”

Singh, 41, hails from Jalandhar in Punjab. He made his debut in 1998 and is best remembered for the 32 wickets he took in the 2001 India vs Australia Test series. Singh, who is more known for his spin bowling, has played in all types of Test matches, ODIs, T20s and IPL.

Five seats in the Rajya Sabha will fall vacant on April 9 when the terms of sitting Congress MPs Pratap Singh Bajwa and Shamsher Singh Dullo, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)’s Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Naresh Gujral and BJP’s Shwet Malik expire. End. Elections for these Rajya Sabha seats will be held on March 31.

Since AAP has a majority in the Punjab Assembly by winning 92 seats out of 117, its candidates will be elected unopposed. The term of the members of Rajya Sabha is six years.
