The name of Hartalika Teej is derived from a combination of two words, Harat and Aalika which originally mean ‘kidnap’ and ‘female friend’ respectively.

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati’s father had decided to marry her to Lord Vishnu. However, Goddess Parvati did not want to marry him and wanted Lord Shiva as her husband. On the day of marriage, Devi’s friend took her to a dense forest to save her from marriage with Lord Vishnu. After being taken to the forest she spent years praying to Lord Shiva.

Eventually, ‘Bholenath’ appeared before him to answer his dedicated prayers. Moreover, he also accepted Devi’s plea to marry him and eventually tied the knot with her. Many devotees believe that Lord Shiva accepted the goddess on the day of Hartalika Teej.

Married women observe Nirjala fast on this holy day. They get up early in the morning during Brahma Muhurta and get ready for the day in good clothes. During the auspicious time, they perform puja with all the rituals and recite the story related to Hartalika Teej. The puja ends with aarti and distribution of prasad.
