Has over 30 million enrollments in its own 300 MOOC courses

The ministry urged HELs to access the courses, adding that they are also eligible for credit transfer after successful completion of the final proctored test (Representational image).

According to the Ministry of Education, since its launch in 2017, the MOOC platform has already administered exams to over 26 lakh applicants, and currently has 8.8 lakh active assignment submissions.

Government-run Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) themselves have more enrollment than any other e-learning platform in the country. It has more than 2.4 crore enrollments on its own in credit earning courses. Adding the number of courses that do not have examinations, the enrollment swells to over 3 crore, the daily reported.

The Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) strives to make students self-reliant in learning by eliminating the need for external infrastructure. Teachers and students can communicate using the portal themselves to solve problems and attend lessons.

To promote digital education, the government encourages students and instructors to use the SWAYAM platform. Computing with Python, offered by IIT-Ropar, is currently one of the most popular courses on the platform itself with 46,081 student enrollments. This is followed by a course on Ethical Hacking by IIT-Kharagpur, Programming in C++ by IIT-Bombay and Programming in Java by IIT-Kharagpur.

To spread awareness about the platform in each state, the Ministry of Education has now written to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

Vineet Joshi, Additional Secretary, Department of Higher Education, MoE, in a letter to HEls said, “The MOOs themselves are developed by academicians from top-ranked institutions and provided free of cost to all learners. Today Swayam is a rich repository of over 300 high quality MOOC courses enrolling over 3 crore students.”

The Ministry urged HELs to access the courses, stating that they are also eligible for credit transfer after successful completion of the final proctored test. Apart from the popularity of technical and professional courses, the letter states that there has been an increase in enrollment for courses in the education sector after the pandemic. The emphasis on ICT-led teaching and learning in the NEP as well as the changing paradigm of the teaching and learning process post COVID was also mentioned by Vineet Joshi. Further, the letter requested the colleges to accept the credits themselves and send written appreciation to the University Grants Commission.

According to the ministry, since its launch in 2017, the MOOC platform has already administered exams to over 26 lakh applicants, and currently has 8.8 lakh active assignment submissions. It also offers post-exam credit transfer at minimal cost, and currently has over 3,000 MOOC-free courses available from various fields.
