Makhana is a top class Indian breakfast. You can fry it, mix it with spices, add it to curries or even make something sweet. Makhana is something that is cheap and also easy to cook. Plus, you can find it at any local market and even supermarkets. But have you ever wondered where these little things come from? Well, they certainly don’t come from a tree or a fruit. There is a big and tedious method of making makhana. Recently, a viral video showing how farmers harvest makhana, has left the internet divided.

Makhana seeds are grown on a single leaf. Then the farmers have to collect those seeds and clean them in water. Later they are dried in the sun. After drying, they are quickly whipped over high heat so that the black balls break and a white puff comes out. We can see the whole process in a video uploaded by food vlogger @foodieincarnate. Farmers can be seen removing and cleaning seeds in a mud-filled pond. Later they are also seen plowing on the seeds with their feet. Ever since the video was uploaded, it has been viewed 1.2 million times and garnered 62.5k likes and many comments. One user wrote, “Never going to eat them again.” Another person said, “After seeing this, I can’t eat them. Before, I would have eaten them without thinking.” Someone also added, “Isn’t this an unhygienic process to build a makhana?”

In comparison to these comments, many praised the hard work of the farmers. One user wrote, “Salute to the farmers. Salute and thank you for our favorite healthy snack.” Another user wrote, “So much hard work for these fox nuts. Salute to those hardworking men.” A third person also added, “No wonder it’s so expensive. It’s so hard, but I hope these guys get paid a good amount for their work.”
