HDFC twins, SBI, Maruti Suzuki, Cipla are among top gainers, losers today

Indian market witnessed a cheerful session on Tuesday with Sensex advancing over 63,400 and Nifty 50 ending above 18,800. Banking and financial stocks were top performers after merger updates from HDFC. Domestic equities shrugged off mixed global cues. Midcap and smallcap stocks also gained traction. India’s volatility index nosedived by over 5.4%.

Sensex ended at 63,416.03, up by 446.03 points or 0.71%. Nifty 50 settled at 18,817.40, higher by 126.20 points or 0.68%.

Talking about the current market performance, Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services said, “The domestic market rallied, primarily supported by banking and finance stocks, which received a boost from the merger updates from HDFC. Meanwhile, global trends were mixed as the Chinese market showed signs of recovery, driven by hopes of additional policy stimulus, whereas European markets traded with declines in response to hawkish commentary from the President of the ECB.”

Further, Nair added, “Ahead of the release of US stock data, oil prices eased as concerns regarding Russian political instability and potential supply disruptions were alleviated.”

There were more stocks bought than sold. On BSE, a total of 2,019 stocks advanced, while 1,472 stocks declined, and the remaining 147 stocks were unchanged. Meanwhile, 133 stocks hit a new 52-week high, and 27 stocks touched a new 52-week low.
